How to Know If You Need a Medicare Advantage Plan
February 15, 2022 | Kari Mellone
When you’re newly eligible for Medicare, the options can be overwhelming. What’s the difference between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Part D and Medigap? How do I know if I need a Medicare Advantage Plan, or if another plan is the right choice for me? At Twin City Underwriters, we’re here to help you answer those questions – and to find the right Medicare plan for your unique needs.
Here are a few things to consider when determining whether you need a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Do I Need a Medicare Advantage Plan?
You may need a Medicare Advantage Plan if you:
- Need coverage for prescription medication
- Need coverage for vision, hearing, dental and other care
- Need extra benefits such as gym memberships, nutrition education, or in-home support. (Note: these Medicare extra benefits vary by plan, so make sure to inquire with your insurance agent or insurance company before signing up for a plan.)

In addition, many people choose Medicare Advantage Plans because they want a simpler Medicare experience. Medicare Advantage may cover all your needs, and you won’t have to buy multiple plans to supplement Original Medicare. Similarly, a Medicare Advantage plan may come with lower out-of-pocket costs. Contact an experienced Medicare insurance broker if you have questions about plan costs and coverage.
When Might Medicare Advantage be the Wrong Choice?
People with Original Medicare can use any U.S. medical provider or facility that takes Medicare. When enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you generally will need to adhere to a specific network. If you do receive care from an out-of-network provider, you may have a higher cost sharing.
If you want or need to continue seeing a specific doctor, check to make sure they’re in the plan before signing up. Also, keep in mind that you may be required to get referrals or prior approval before certain procedures or treatments.
