What is MyMedicare.gov?
MyMedicare.gov is part of the government website for Medicare. Here you can see your personal Medicare statement. This will show you what your current plan and coverage options are. The benefit of setting up MyMedicare.gov is that you have an online resource to review your plan. This makes it easier if you want to change your plan in the future, so you don’t have to dig through physical paperwork.
Creating an account on MyMedicare.gov is not the same as signing up for Medicare. You’ll create a MyMedicare.gov account after you’ve already enrolled in Medicare.
Is MyMedicare.gov safe?
MyMedicare.gov is completely safe to enter your personal information into. You may also receive letters in the mail from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services asking you to visit MyMedicare.gov – this is legitimate as well. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services are a government agency connected to Medicare. If you ever receive a letter in the mail related to your Medicare or MyMedicare.gov website, you can always contact us directly and we’ll do a safety check on your behalf to make sure it’s legitimate.
To keep your information safe, always type MyMedicare.gov directly into your address bar. To be safe, NEVER click on a link in an email that directs you to MyMedicare.gov.
Scammers are very good at replicating Medicare websites and will sometimes send out emails that look legitimate to trick you into entering your login information on a fake website. To be cautious, type “MyMedicare.gov” directly into your address bar every time you visit the website, or create a bookmark in your web browser to access it quickly.
How to Set Up MyMedicare.gov
You will first need to be enrolled in Medicare. You’ll go to MyMedicare.gov and click on “Create Account.” From here, follow these steps:
Step One: Fill out the form. This form will ask you basic contact information like your last name, date of birth and email address. However, you’ll also need to enter information about your Medicare in order to continue. First, you’ll be asked to enter your Medicare Number. You can find your Medicare Number on your red, white and blue Medicare card.
If you don’t have your Medicare card yet, you can find your Medicare number by logging into your Social Security account. If you’re unsure how to log into Social Security or need further assistance, you can call 1-800-633-4227 to speak to a MyMedicare.gov representative that can walk you through finding your Medicare Number.
Step Two: Create a username and password. You’ll use this every time you log into MyMedicare.gov, so you want to make sure it is easily remembered. However, it’s also important to create a secure password so that your information is protected. For a truly strong password aim for 8-14 characters that uses a mix of numbers, symbols, capital letters and lower-case letters.
Those are the only steps you need to take to register online. Once you’ve set up your MyMedicare.gov account, you can log in at any time to view your Medicare plan.
