How Does Medicare Work with Social Security?
April 19, 2023 | John Demko
Medicare and Social Security are two separate programs that serve to provide financial protection and health insurance to the US population.
Social Security is a federal program that administers retirement, disability, survivor, and family benefits.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for individuals 65 or older, and younger individuals with qualifying disabilities.
How Do They Work Together?
Although these programs exist to provide two different benefits, they do work hand in hand in some ways. Social Security oversees the enrollment progress for Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. To fulfill this role, the Social Security Administration (SSA) collaborates with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to notify eligible individuals about their Medicare enrollment choices, assist with their applications, and manage premium payments.
Enrollment:
The Social Security Administration will notify eligible individuals of their Medicare enrollment options. If you are collecting social security benefits at the time you turn 65, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare. Based on your situation, you may decide to accept enrollment, or you may choose to delay your enrollment into Medicare Part A and/or Part B. Need help deciding what is best for you?

Applications:
If you are not receiving social security income at the time you become eligible for Medicare, you will need to apply to enroll in Medicare. This can be done through the Social Security Administration, either online at ssa.gov or in person at your local social security office.

Payments:
Although most individuals do not have a premium for Medicare Part A, there is a premium for Medicare Part B. Medicare premiums can be deducted directly from your Social Security benefit payment. If you are not collecting social security, there are several other options available for making your premium payment including, online and by mail. Learn more about Medicare payment options.
