6 Ways Seniors Can Increase Energy Levels
July 10, 2024 | Kathy Ingulsrud
As we age, it’s common not to feel as energized as we did in our youth. Even the second or third cup of coffee may not have you feeling as energized as it once did. Add some joint stiffness or back pain to the mix, and you’re likely not feeling up for some of the activities or hobbies you once enjoyed. Fortunately, there are ways seniors can take action to combat decreased stamina and maintain and even increase their energy levels.
6 Ways Seniors Can Increase Energy Levels
Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough rest each night makes a significant difference in your energy levels. Some ways seniors can make sure they are getting enough sleep, and restful sleep, are by having a bedtime routine that promotes good rest, including turning off screens and devices about an hour before they plan to go to sleep each night and making their sleeping space calm and comfortable. If you are consistently having a difficult time staying asleep talking with your primary doctor may be helpful.
Take a Nap
Whether you got a good night’s rest or tossed and turned a bit more than usual, a mid-day nap can be a great way to recharge your batteries and increase your energy for the rest of the day ahead. According to the American Heart Association, even a short 20-minute nap can increase alertness, enhance mood, and improve memory.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is another way seniors can maintain and increase energy levels. Drinking water daily helps our bodies and organs function properly; when we do not consume enough water, our bodies can become dehydrated, leading to slower circulation, resulting in tiredness and trouble focusing.
Eat Quality Food
Eating nutrient-dense, quality whole foods is essential for nourishing our bodies and keeping energy levels high. Regularly eating low-quality, highly processed foods can lead to ups and downs in our body and mood and, over time, increase our chances of health problems and disease.

Maintain Muscle with Movement
Keeping up strength and muscle can have a direct impact on our energy levels. When our muscle tone diminishes, our bodies have to work harder to do the things we do daily, which can leave us feeling a lack of energy. So even if you are struggling with low energy levels, making it a priority to partake in everyday movement, even a comfortable walk, can make a significant difference over time in your stamina and energy level.
Spend Time Outside
Getting outside and soaking up the natural light and fresh air is a well-known method for boosting both mood and energy levels. Depending on your location, the time of year, and the weather conditions, it’s important to take additional safety measures to protect yourself from the summer heat or winter chill. However, making the effort to spend some time outdoors each day can be incredibly beneficial for everyone.
