3 Ways to Stay Active This Spring
May 3, 2022 | Todd Lewison
As the weather warms and the flowers bloom, it’s a perfect time to get outside and reconnect with people, nature, and the things that bring us joy. Here are a few ways to get outside and stay active this spring.
1. Connect with Others
“Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives,” writes researcher and author Brené Brown. Spring is the perfect time to reconnect with other people. The warm weather means outdoor spaces and special events will be widely available. You can meet a friend at an outdoor café, explore local farmer’s markets, and enjoy outdoor music events and art festivals. Local tour groups are also re-opening, providing transportation to events. This can be a fun and accessible way to meet new people and enjoy a day out.
Another way of feeling connection is to spend time with animals. Even if you don’t have pets of your own, there are many places to go to connect with animals. Visit a pet store, spend time with friends who have pets, or check out a local dog park. Minnesota has wonderful dog parks with trails and features and friendly animals!
2. Connect with Nature
Naturalist John Muir wrote, “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike.”
Being outdoors in nature is healing. Going for a walk, gardening, bird watching, biking, swimming – choose your favorite! All of these outdoor activities are ways of slowing down to match the rhythm of the natural world and re-center ourselves.
3. Connect with Yourself
It is easy to get caught up in things we “have” to do. What is something you would LIKE to do this spring? What are things that bring you joy? “Always Find Time for The Things That Make You Feel Happy to Be Alive.” What a valuable reminder! To experience the joy of life, we need to make time to do the things that bring us joy.
You could read a good book, start a new hobby, walk a nearby wooded trail, or cook a favorite meal to enjoy. Here in the Twin Cities, there are always free events to partake in and new places to explore. This is a great way to feel connected to the area we live and our community.
So, ask yourself: What parks and trails have I not yet visited? What outdoor, free city events would I like to attend? What neighborhood restaurants have we never tried?
Enjoy this season of life! Make time for your favorite activities this spring and reconnect with what brings you joy.
