Medicare Advantage vs Medicare Supplements: Which One Is Right For Me?
June 17, 2024 | Tom Peterson
As you approach your 65th birthday, you’re likely to be bombarded with information, emails, and mailers from various Medicare insurance companies. It can be overwhelming to decipher the medicare jargon and know which Medicare Plan is the one for you.
Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplements are the two primary plans that can be used in conjunction with Original Medicare. To assist you in making an informed decision, we’ve prepared a chart that outlines the key characteristics of these two plan types. This tool is designed to guide you toward the plan that best suits your needs.
Medicare Advantage | Medicare Supplements (Medigap) |
Often includes an embedded drug plan | Must purchase a stand-alone drug plan |
The plans are network based | You can go to any doctor that accepts Medicare |
Premiums tend to be lower | Premiums tend to be higher |
Annual contract | Guaranteed Renewable – cannot change benefits but can change premium |
Medicare Advantage:
Medicare Advantage plans, commonly referred to as Medicare Part C, are an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans (MA/MAPD’s) are offered through private insurance companies that are paid by Medicare to administer your health care coverage. These plans provide the same coverage as Medicare Part A and Part B and often include additional coverage and benefits. It’s important to note that when you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you are still required to pay your Part B premium.

Medicare Supplements (Medigap):
Medicare Supplement plans, or Medigap policies, can cover some health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover (like copayments and deductibles). Medigap plans do not cover dental care, hearing or vision benefits.
